Purple Carrot Bread Co. | Our Story
A bakery built on bread and no shortcuts
Alaina and Doug Brackett opened Purple Carrot Bread Co. in Lowell, MA, with a simple conviction: real food takes time, and that time is worth it. Artisan bread is still at the center of everything they do.
The bread, from the start
Every loaf at Purple Carrot is baked fresh, in small batches, with no preservatives and no dough conditioners — just flour, water, time, and care. Core loaves like *Country Blonde*, *Country Wheat*, and *Kalamata Olive & Rosemary* anchor the menu, joined by seasonal varieties like *Apple Cider Sourdough* and *Cranberry Walnut* when the time is right.
What "from scratch" really means
Here, it means your soup was simmered in-house this morning, your salad dressing was mixed fresh, your vegetables were hand-chopped, and your croissant was hand-rolled — not pulled from a freezer. That kind of cooking takes longer, and that's exactly the point.
From farm markets to Merrimack Street
Purple Carrot got its start at farmers markets across the Merrimack Valley — selling artisan bread directly to neighbors before there was a cafe. That market presence in Chelmsford, Andover, Wakefield, and beyond is still going strong.
A second home in Dracut
The Dracut location at Bridgewood Plaza on Bridge Street opened to bring Purple Carrot's bread and Take & Bake meals closer to the neighborhoods that had been driving into Lowell for years. It's takeout-only — a neighborhood bread shop the way a neighborhood bread shop should be.
The community noticed
Merrimack Valley Magazine named Purple Carrot Best Bakery — and Boston.com recognized them among the best places to get a croissant in Greater Boston. Neither one is something they'd brag about unprompted, but they're happy to let the bread do the talking.
